The Power of Communication – The Real Foundation for Success

In the first article of this series, we introduced the business equation that makes or breaks companies in times of challenge: aligning culture, communication, and strategy. We discussed how, when these elements are in sync, they fuel sustainable growth, drive efficiency, and help businesses overcome adversity. When they’re not aligned (or realigned over time), they can kneecap our best efforts, mow through our budgets and double our required inputs of time, money and energy.
If you missed it, I’ve included a link to the first article at the end of this one.
Now, let’s dive deeper into one of the most foundational elements of that equation: communication.
Why Start with Communication?
When we think of the word “foundation,” we tend to envision something solid, something on which the rest of the structure relies. In business, communication is that foundation – because without clear, effective communication, even the most well-crafted strategies and cultural initiatives will fail to take hold.
To put it plainly, communication isn’t just an operational tool; it’s the bedrock upon which we build everything else.
But why is communication such a critical starting point? The answer is simple: before we can talk about culture or strategy, we need to understand each other. If part of your brain is asking “why can’t they just get on with it?”, remember that the most powerful teams are those who make full use of their diversity, not their robotic sameness. We need to create a space where open dialogue, honest feedback, and shared perspectives can happen. Without those skills, we’re building on shaky ground.
But who has time to focus on communication skills when there are so many outcomes already in play? Well, the short answer is no one – or rather no one you employ to focus on those aforementioned outcomes, that is. THAT’s why communication is often what ends up costing most companies the money, time and resources it does. That, and a lack of overarching alignment and strategy (for the same reason).
Here’s the good news: renewing communication is not nearly as complicated or time-consuming as you might think – especially when you know who to call to help guide the process. The perceived cost of prioritising communication (in terms of time, energy, or shifting focus) is vastly outweighed by the cost of not addressing it. In fact, poor communication is one of the biggest drains on time and resources in business today.
Improving communication is a great reset and reenergizing step that has far-reaching benefits. So, when you’re considering how to fire up your team for a powerful drive forward, start here. The cost of implementing foundational communication practices is minimal when compared to the compounded costs of misalignment, lost productivity, or disengagement from poorly managed communication.
The Danger of Starting Without It
Imagine a flight crew heading into a critical situation – whether that’s turbulent weather, a mechanical issue, or a high-stakes landing. Without crystal-clear communication, the team’s ability to manage the situation is severely compromised. In aviation, communication isn’t just a helpful tool – it’s a survival skill. It’s the difference between a successful flight and a catastrophic failure.
Business teams face similar stakes, even if the crises they deal with don’t always seem as immediate. Whether you’re leading a company, managing a department, or driving a project, you’re navigating complexities, personalities, and goals. If you don’t have the ability to communicate clearly – both to give direction and to listen – you’ll quickly find that the best-laid plans go awry.
It’s not that teams don’t try to communicate; it’s that most teams are working with communication skills that haven’t been intentionally honed. What does that look like in practice?
- Leaders waste time plugging gaps in understanding, repeating themselves or explaining the same issue from different angles without progress.
- Teams misinterpret directives or requests, leading to misalignment and wasted resources.
- Frustration builds, as employees struggle to understand their roles or objectives, eventually leading to disengagement.
The Link Between Communication, Culture, and Strategy
Communication is the precursor to everything else. If you don’t have the ability to discuss where you’re coming from, your personal values, and your perspectives, how can you begin to shape a cohesive team culture? Without dialogue, how can you ensure your strategy is aligned and understood by everyone responsible for executing it?
Think of it this way: culture is what ties us together as a team or an organisation. It’s the shared values and beliefs that shape how we operate day to day. But how do we create, reset or reinforce culture? It starts with conversations – open, honest, and sometimes difficult conversations about who we are, what we stand for, and where we’re going.
Similarly, strategy relies on communication. Even the best business strategies can fail if they’re not communicated effectively. Everyone on the team needs to understand not just the “what” but the “why.” Without communication, strategy is reduced to a list of tasks instead of a shared mission that energises and engages the team.
Recognising the Value of Different Perspectives
One of the greatest benefits of honing communication skills is that it allows us to truly hear where others are coming from. This is especially important in today’s business landscape, where diverse teams with varying perspectives are the norm. If we can’t create a space for those perspectives to be shared and appreciated, we’re missing out on opportunities for growth and innovation.
Good communication goes beyond simply exchanging information. It involves managing our own perspectives and being open to others’. In aviation, we call this situational awareness – knowing what’s happening around you and understanding how it affects the entire team. In business, the same principle applies. By mastering communication, we’re better equipped to:
- Recognise the strengths of our teammates, creating stronger, more cohesive teams.
- Build trust, which is essential for setting the groundwork for larger conversations about culture and strategy.
- Clarify expectations, reducing confusion and keeping everyone moving in the same direction.
Why It’s Imperative to Start Here
In business, we can’t skip steps. Communication isn’t something we can afford to brush over or take for granted. Without it, we can’t set the space to talk about culture, to define our values, or to map out our strategy.
When it comes to creating a strong, resilient business, communication is non-negotiable. In fact, it’s the first domino that needs to fall for everything else to work.
If you’ve experienced low energy in your leadership team, noticed that directives aren’t being executed as planned, or found yourself constantly re-explaining core objectives, it may be time to reassess your foundation. Before you can move forward with building a strong culture or developing a cohesive strategy, take a moment to evaluate your team’s communication. Ask yourself:
- Is there clear communication within my team, from leadership down to operations?
- Do I understand where each of my team members is coming from, their values, and their concerns?
- Are there any barriers to open dialogue that are hindering our ability to work effectively?
Practical Steps to Start Right Now
Here are a couple of practical steps you can take today to begin re-aligning your team’s communication:
- Create Space for Open Dialogue:
Dedicate a portion of your next team meeting to open discussion. Ask each team member to share their biggest challenges in terms of communication. You may be surprised at how much insight this simple exercise can give. - Clarify Roles and Expectations:
Miscommunication often stems from a lack of clarity. Have each person outline their understanding of their role and their objectives for the next quarter. Then, align this with the team’s goals to ensure everyone is on the same page.
By starting these conversations, you’re already laying the groundwork for deeper, more effective communication that will fuel your culture and drive your strategy.
